Alex "Kelsy" Kuriawa, 99, of Kenilworth, passed away on May 5, 2019, at Overlook Hospital, Summit. Born in Elizabeth, he lived in Kenilworth since 1953. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-9pm at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave, Roselle Park, NJ. Funeral mass will be on Friday at 10am at St. Theresa Church, Kenilworth. Cremation will be private.

Alex was Superintendent of Public Works for Kenilworth, where he worked for over 30 years before retiring 34 years ago. He cherished time with the Kenilworth Police managing their PBA 135 hall for many years. As a silver life card holder Kelsy was constantly ribbing the officers, and enjoyed card games and golf outings with the boys. He was an avid fisherman at home on Shark River and Raritan Bay. He was also a lover of crosswords and Jeopardy. Always a hustler, his side gigs included bartending at the Grotto Restaurant and Sunnyside Tavern in Kenilworth and recycling before it was in vogue. Over the years he played and excelled at handball, pool, ping-pong, golf, and bowling, including as president of the Kenilworth Bowling League at Clark Lanes. He’ll be missed most for the smiles he brought and the way he touched everyone he met with his story-telling, sharp wit and sweetness.

Alex served his country in the US Army during WWII in the European African Middle Eastern Theater, including at the Battle of Normandy.

Alex was predeceased by his wife Helen in 2018. Surviving are his sons, Kevin (Susan), Christopher, (Mayda), John (Kimmarie) & Michael and his grandchildren, Phillip, Justin, Julia, Bryan, Lucas & Alex.

Dear Kevin Chris, John, and Michael: I am indeed saddened about the recent passing of your simply marvelous Dad, Kelsey. It was my pleasure to work with him when he served as head of he Department Works. He was so dedicated to performing his numerous responsibilities in a detailed manner. He was of "the old school" in recognizing that one's actions had an impact on the well being of others so you needed to perform your duties in the best fashion possible. He was a man of integrity. He never sacrificed quality for expediency. It was an honor for him to serve his country in WWII. He fought in some of the most dangerous battles of the war.
When i saw him in his later years he still exhibited the same dominating, upbeat spirit as when we first met. You are indeed fortunate children to have had a Dad such as he. Warmest personal regards, Walter E. Boright

I grew up 2 doors down from Kelsey n Helen. They were just great people to everyone who knew them. Kelsey was always so funny and playing tricks on us kids. They both will be greatly missed. Kelsey was an icon in Kenilworth and will always remain so. R.I.P. Kelsey. We loved you dearly 🙏🏻❤️ My condolences to the family.

Kelsey and Helen were very good friends of my parents, Marge and Lou Castello. They came to my wedding in 1989 and a good time was had by all. Kelsey was always the life of the party and had an infectious laugh. At gatherings when children were present, he would speak in Pig Latin, thinking we didn’t know what he was saying, but we did. He was so much fun. Helen was my sponsor at my Confirmation and I’m sorry that I didn’t know she passed last year. They were wonderful people and I pray that God blesses them and keeps them close, forever. Sincerely, Susan Castello Gordon, Gainesville, Florida
